Late Rally in Game One Gives UWSP Split with Hamline

DUNDAS, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (4-2) needed a late rally in game one to split a twin bill against Hamline (3-1) on Saturday. The Pointers rallied for a 4-3 win in game one, but fell in game two, 3-0.

Freshman Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) had two hits, one in each game, for the Pointers.  She drove in two runs and scored another.  Fellow freshman Megan Lawrence (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) had two hits as well with a run scored and an RBI.

Sophomore Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) scored a run and went 2-for-3 in game one.

Game 1 – UWSP 4, Hamline 3
Lawrence began the Pointers' second inning with a single.  Then with two away, Becca Geiyer (Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township) singled to drive in Lawrence as UWSP took a 1-0 lead.

Hamline scored a pair of unearned runs in the third and added another in the fourth to put the Pointers behind 3-1.

Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) drew a walk to leadoff the sixth.  Candre followed with a single and both advanced to scoring position on a groundout.  Traxel ripped a single to left-center to knot the game at 3-3.  Lawrence followed with an RBI double to put UWSP in the lead.

Senior Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) pitched the final three frames of perfect ball, striking out four to pick up the win.  Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) started and struck out three.

Game 2 – UWSP 0, Hamline 3
Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) got the game's first hit to start the second inning, but UWSP was unable to push home a run.

The Pipers put up two runs I the fourth on three hits.  Hamline added a third run in the sixth to complete the scoring.

UWSP had a chance to score in the fourth as consecutive miscues by Hamline put two aboard.  Again in the seventh, the Pointers got two on as Traxel picked up UWSP's second hit of the game.  Neither inning produced a run.

Freshman Lauren Lindahl (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) went 3.1 innings in the circle in her second start of the season.  Tkach and Cohen each had a strikeout in relief.

The Pointers remain in Minnesota to face Bethel in a doubleheader on Monday (March 2). First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
