Pointers Get Past Bethel in Game One, Fall in Game Two

WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (5-3) split a doubleheader against Bethel (3-1) on Monday, winning game one, 5-1, and falling in game two, 5-0.

Freshman Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) continued her impressive offensive weekend with four hits in the twin bill.  She drove in a run and scored another in game one.

Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) had a pair of hits in game one with an RBI and scored twice.  Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) hit safely in both games and scored a run.

Game 1 – UWSP 5, Bethel 1
Candre and Luedtke hit consecutive doubles to lead off the fourth inning to put UWSP up 1-0.  Traxel followed with a single and an error on the play allowed the second run to score.  Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) doubled and an RBI fielder's choice by Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) made it 3-0.  With two away, Madi Greenaberg (Downers Grove, Ill./North) singled to push the lead to 4-0.

In the sixth, Luedtke and Traxel hit back-to-back singles to push home a run and give UWSP a 5-0 advantage.

Bethel got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a run on a hit and a couple wild pitches.

Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) earned the win with 4.0 innings pitched.  She struck out five. Cohen picked up the save with four strikeouts in 3.0 frames.

Game 2 – UWSP 0, Bethel 5
The Royals scored a run in the first on two hits and a UWSP error.  Another error in the third gave BU a second run.  The Royals continued to take advantage of UWSP miscues with two runs on two hits and two errors in the fifth.

In the seventh, Bethel added another run on three hits.

UWSP was able to muster just two hits in game two.  Candre had a first inning bunt single and Traxel led off the fifth with a double, but neither was driven home.

Tkach had four more strikeouts in the circle with 2.2 innings in relief.  Lauren Lindahl (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) suffered the loss despite 2.1 innings pitched without walking a batter.

The Pointers are next in action on March 13 at the Spring Games in Florida.  UWSP will begin the trip against Lake Forest at 4:00 p.m. ET that day.
