STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 9 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (17-6-3) extended its unbeaten streak to 14 with a 4-1 win over No. 15 UW-River Falls (16-9-3) in game one of the WIAC Commissioner's Cup semifinals (presented by Culver's).
Zach Zech (South Lyon, Mich./) opened the scoring just 2:44 into the game with his team-lead tying 16th goal of the season.
Luke McElhenie (Sauk City, Wis./) and
Drew McLean (Waterford, Mich./) assisted on the goal.
In the second period, UWRF briefly tied the game at 1-1. Just 40 seconds later,
Austin Kelly (Toledo, Ohio/) capitalized on a mad scramble in front of the UWRF net for the eventual game-winner.
Brennen Miller (Keller, Texas/) and
Colin Raver (Bartlett, Ill./) had assists.
Late in the second, McElhenie regain the outright team lead in goals with his 17th of the year.
Kelly O'Brien (Detroit, Mich./) and Zech added helpers.
Logan Fredericks (Millstone Township, N.J./) capped the scoring with an unassisted tally in the third period.
Eli Billing (Windsor, Ont./) made 27 saves in the win for UWSP. UWRF goaltender Zach Quinn had 40 saves.
The Pointers and Falcons meet again on Saturday (Feb. 29) at K. B. Willett Arena in game two of the semifinals. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.
