STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 9 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (18-6-3) got two goals each from
Steven Quagliata (Bartlett, Ill./) and
Carter Roo (Champlin, Minn./) en route to a 5-1 win over No. 15 UW-River Falls (16-10-3) in game two of the WIAC Commissioner's Cup semifinals (presented by Culver's). The Pointers advance to the WIAC Championship Game for the sixth-straight season and will host UW-Eau Claire on March 7 at 7:00 p.m.
Late in the first period,
Drew McLean (Waterford, Mich./) lasered a one-timer from the blue line into the net. His power-play tally at 18:37 was set up by Quagliata.
Early in the second, Quagliata lit the lamp after picking up a loose puck in the UWRF zone. Just 21 seconds later, Roo netted his first of the game pushing the lead to 3-0.
Ryan MacKellar (Indianapolis, Ind./) picked up an assist on the play.
The Falcons got on the board later in the second with a power-play goal at 15:26.
UWSP struck again early in the third period. Roo scored his second of the game at the 1:33 mark with MacKellar and
Jordan Fader (Rice Lake, Wis./) adding assists.
Late in the third, Quagliata capped the scoring with his second goal of the night.
Ryan Orgel (Los Angeles, Calif./) and
Austin Kelly (Toledo, Ohio/) were credited with assists on the play.
Eli Billing (Windsor, Ont./) needed to make just 15 saves in the win for UWSP. UWRF goaltender Zach Quinn had 33 saves.
The Pointers and Blugolds meet in the WIAC Commissioner's Cup final for the fourth-consecutive season. Puck drop is slated for 7:00 p.m. at K.B. Willett Arena on March 7. Tickets for the WIAC Championship game go on sale Monday (Mar. 2) at 8:00 a.m. Fans can purchase tickets online at
