EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Sophomore goaltender
Olivia Schultz (Maplewood, Minn./Tartan) made 50 saves, but two power-play goals by the host No. 3 UW-Eau Claire Blugolds (21-3-2) spoiled her stellar outing as the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (9-12-6) fell in game one of the WIAC Championship semifinals (presented by Culver's) by a 2-1 score.
Schultz's 50 saves were the second-most in a WIAC Tournament game behind former Pointer
Sydney Conley's (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) 55 a season ago in Eau Claire.
The Blugolds broke through in the second period with a power-play tally at the 10:47 mark.
Freshman
Maike Zipp (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) evened the game at 1-1 at the 6:37 mark of the third after chipping in a loose puck in front of the net.
Mary Kremer (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead Warhawks) and
Maddie Monroe (Aurora, Ill./Batavia) picked up assists on the equalizer.
The game remained tied until the 11:15 mark of the third when UWEC scored again on the power play. UWSP was unable to find the equalizer with Schultz pulled in the final 1:26.
UWEC goaltender Erin Connolly made 15 saves.
The Pointers and Blugolds face off at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 29) in the second game of the semifinals.
