STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 11 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (16-6-3, 10-2-3) won a share of its fourth-straight WIAC regular season championship with a 5-0 shutout win over Northland (4-20-1, 1-14-0) in the regular season finale on Saturday. The win is UWSP's seventh in a row and the Pointers run their unbeaten streak to 13-consecutive.
At the 4:59 mark of the first period,
Jake Theis (Chanhassen, Minn./) gave UWSP a 1-0 lead with
Brandon McReynolds (North Vancouver, B.C./) and
Logan Fredericks (Millstone Township, N.J./) picking up assists.
Zach Zech (South Lyon, Mich./) scored at the 11:20 mark to put UWSP ahead 2-0.
Luke McElhenie (Sauk City, Wis./) and
Danny Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz./) had assists.
In the second period, McElhenie took a feed from Zech and
Kelly O'Brien (Detroit, Mich./) to make it 3-0. Late in the period, O'Brien pushed the lead to four with Zech and
Ryan Orgel (Los Angeles, Calif./) assisting on the play.
Fredericks capped the scoring in the third period with a power-play goal at 12:01 with O'Brien and Orgel getting assists.
Eli Billing (Windsor, Ont./) made 24 saves for his third shutout of the season. Taylor Unruh had 38 saves for NC.
The Pointers will host the semifinal round of the WIAC Tournament on Feb. 28 and 29 against a yet-to-be-determined opponent. Puck drop is slated for 7:00 p.m. both nights at K.B. Willett Arena.
