STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens point men's hockey team (12-6-3, 6-2-3) didn't lead in the game until there was 16 seconds left in the third period in a 3-2 win over No. 12 UW-Superior (12-6-3, 5-6-0). The Pointers tallied two power-play goals in the final 1:11 of the game to win.
The Yellowjackets struck first with a power-play goal at 13:10 of the first period.
Just 26 seconds later,
Ryan MacKellar (Indianapolis, Ind./) pulled the Pointers even at 1-1.
Colin Raver (Bartlett, Ill./) and
Carter Roo (Champlin, Minn./) tallied assists.
Neither team was able to break the tie until the third period. UWS regained the lead at 8:22 of the third.
Trailing late, UWSP pulled its goaltender while on the power play. The move paid off as
Zach Zech (South Lyon, Mich./) tied the game at 18:49 on an assist from Roo.
Still on the power play, the Pointers took the lead with just 15.3 seconds left with Roo chipping the puck in from close range, his third point of the night.
Luke McElhenie (Sauk City, Wis./) and
Eli Billing (Windsor, Ont./) picked up assists on the play.
Billing made 26 saves in the win for the Pointers. UWS goaltender Nick Althaus made 38 saves.
With the win, the Pointers' unbeaten streak reaches nine-straight. UWSP is 7-0-2 during the streak with six of those games coming against ranked opponents (5-0-1).
The Pointers head to Menomonie for a weekend series against UW-Stout. Games are scheduled for Friday (Feb. 7) and Saturday (Feb. 8) with puck drop at 7:00 p.m. both nights.
