STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (7-4-2) scored six times in the first period and rolled to a 9-1 home win over Marian (3-8-1).
Sophie Regovic (Naperville, Ill./Chicago Mission) broke a scoreless tie at 9:26 of the first period, unlocking the offensive floodgates for the Pointers.
Mary Kremer (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead Warhawks) assisted on the goal.
Ashtyn Wiltscheck (Sleepy Eye, Minn./New Ulm) doubled the lead 43 seconds later with
Cassie Newcomer (McFarland, Wis./Madison Capitols) getting the assist. Just 52 seconds later, Kremer gave UWSP a 3-0 lead on an assist from
Kiley Hahner (Wausau, Wis./West).
The Kremer-Hahner connection struck again at the 16:30 mark. The goal was Kremer's third point of the night. Exactly one minute later, Wiltscheck scored her second of the game from fellow freshman
Gina Magro (Tower Lakes, Ill./Barrington).
Regovic closed out the scoring in the first period at the 19:25 mark, her second of the game, with
Haley Sellers (Kenosha, Wis./Milwaukee Jr. Admirals) recording an assist.
Senior
Maddie Monroe (Aurora, Ill./Batavia) pushed the lead to 7-0 just 15 seconds into the second period. Fellow senior
Alex Grubbs (Minong, Wis./Spooner) picked up the helper.
Dani Heitsman (Janesville, Wis./Rock County Fury) added to the lead at 7:44 of the third period. Assists came from Sellers and
McKenna Butcher (Sun Prairie, Wis./Madison Capitols). After the Sabres got on the board, Butcher closed out the scoring at 17:49 with an unassisted tally.
UWSP goaltenders
Olivia Schultz (Maplewood, Minn./Tartan),
Marit Larson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) and
Kaelie Smith (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) each played a period, recording 13 combined saves. Marian also played three goaltenders and combined for 37 saves.
The Pointers travel north to face St. Scholastica in a weekend series beginning Friday (Jan. 10) at 7:00 p.m.
