Pointers’ Late Comeback Stalls at UWW

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (6-7, 1-1) closed to within one early in the fourth quarter, but fell to No. 10 UW-Whitewater (12-1, 2-0) by a 67-49 final.
 
Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) led the Pointers with 13 points.  Senior Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) was also in double figures with 12 points.  Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) added nine points and tied Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) for the team lead with five rebounds.
 
Amber Baehman (Plainfield, Wis./Tri-County) capped a five-point run with a three-pointer as UWSP led 9-4 early.  Collins scored four late points after a 9-0 UWW run to even the score at 13-13 after one.  Baehman scored first in the second quarter for a brief lead, but UWW finished the half on an 18-5 run to lead 31-20 at the break.
 
Four early points by Greenheck and a three by Pfeifer helped UWSP to an 11-6 start to the third.  Cerrato scored six-consecutive points for UWSP to cut the deficit to one possession.  Greenheck buried a three late and UWSP trailed 45-42 heading to the fourth.
 
Collins scored four early points in the fourth as the Pointers got within a point, but the Warhawks closed the game on a 22-5 run to seize the win.
 
UWSP faces its second ranked foe of the week on Saturday (Jan. 11) as No. 9 UW-La Crosse visits Berg Gym.  Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
