STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (7-7, 2-1) used a 23-point second quarter to seize momentum in a 67-58 win over No. 9 UW-La Crosse (11-3, 2-1) on Saturday afternoon.
Junior
Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) led all players with 19 points, one of four Pointers in double figures. She went 9-for-10 from the charity stripe and she had six rebounds.
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) added 13 points and
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) buried a pair of threes with 10 points.
Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) also scored 10 points and led all players with eight rebounds.
Greenheck hit a pair of early free throws for a 2-0 lead as both teams started slow offensively. Schmidt hit UWSP's basket and
Grace Myklebust (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) drilled a three, UWSP trailed 12-9 after one.
Greenheck scored six points and Cerrato capped the 17-3 run with a triple to gain UWSP a 26-15 lead with 3:55 left in the half. From there, the teams traded buckets and UWSP led 32-24 at the half.
Collins scored six points in the third quarter and the Pointers were able to sustain a push by the Eagles to hold a 42-39 advantage heading to the fourth.
Consecutive baskets by
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells), Greenheck and Schmidt kept the Pointers in front early in the fourth.
Amber Baehman (Plainfield, Wis./Tri-County) completed an and-one midway through the fourth and another three by Cerrato pushed the lead to nine. Another basket by Baehman at the 2:25 mark along with eight-consecutive made free throws by the Pointers sealed the win.
The Pointers face UW-Platteville at home on Wednesday (Jan. 15). Tip-off at Berg Gym is set for 7:00 p.m.
