WINONA, Minn. – Sophomore
Mary Kremer (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead Warhawks) scored twice in the third period as the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (6-3-2) opened the 2020 portion of its schedule with a 2-2 tie at Saint Mary's (2-6-2).
The Pointers out-shot the Cardinals in the first period, 8-3, but neither team was able to break through. In the second period, SMU took a 1-0 lead and held UWSP to just one shot of goal.
Kremer tied the game at 1-1 on her first goal of the night at 5:33 of the third period.
Emma Berthiaume (South Haven, Minn./Hutchinson) and
Kiley Hahner (Wausau, Wis./West) had assists on the goal.
Less than three minutes later, Kremer put UWSP ahead 2-1 with Hahner and
Alex Grubbs (Minong, Wis./Spooner) adding helpers.
The Pointers held the lead until the 16:49 mark when SMU tied the game at 2-2. UWSP was able to kill off two penalties at the end of regulation and in overtime to secure the tie.
Olivia Schultz (Maplewood, Minn./Tartan) made 28 saves for UWSP. Ary Ziakas made 18 saves for SMU.
The Pointers close out the weekend in Minnesota with a 2:00 p.m. puck drop on Sunday (Jan. 5) at Augsburg.
