STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (6-6, 1-0) made eight-consecutive free throws in the final minute to seal a 65-57 victory over UW-River Falls (4-7, 0-1) in the conference opener on Saturday.
Junior
Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) poured in a career-high 24 points, including four of the made free throws late. She went 9-for-9 from the charity stripe and pulled down eight rebounds.
Amber Baehman (Plainfield, Wis./Tri-County) racked up her second-straight double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) was also in double figures with 10 points for UWSP.
Baehman scored four early points as the Pointers opened the game with a 9-0 run. The UWSP defense held UWRF to just one field goal in the first quarter, coming with 28 seconds remaining, to lead 11-5 after 10 minutes.
Greenheck scored UWSP's first five points in the second quarter, but an 11-5 run got the Falcons even at 16-16.
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) nailed a three and back-to-back buckets by Collins gave UWSP a 23-21 edge. Late in the half,
Erin Moran (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) scored a layup as the game was tied 29-29 at the break.
Greenheck and Collins gave UWSP an early lead in the third, but UWRF went on a 12-5 run to take a 42-38 lead. Four-straight points by Baehman tied the game at 42-all, but the Falcons scored the final four points to lead heading to the fourth.
Baehman and Greenheck scored the Pointers' first 11 points of the fourth as UWSP pulled ahead 53-50 midway through. The Pointers didn't make another field goal the rest of the way, but 12 made free throws, including eight-straight following a 57-57 tie with 56 seconds left, were enough to earn the win.
UWSP heads on the road to UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Jan. 8) for a 7:00 p.m. tilt against the Warhawks.
