Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Zech’s Overtime Winner Lands Pointers Big Road Win

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (11-6-3, 5-2-3) squandered a three-goal lead late in the second, but Zach Zech (South Lyon, Mich./) scored his second of the game just 32 seconds into overtime to give UWSP a 6-5 win at No. 12 UW-Superior (12-5-3, 5-5-0).

Luke McElhenie (Sauk City, Wis./) got UWSP on the board at 9:31 of the first with his team-leading 13th goal of the season.  Zech picked up his first point of the night with an assist.

Brandon McReynolds (North Vancouver, B.C./) netted his first of the year to double the lead five minutes later with Jake Theis (Chanhassen, Minn./) getting the assist.

In the second period, the offensive floodgates opened.  The Yellowjackets struck 2:27 into the stanza to cut UWSP's lead in half.

The Pointers responded with two goals less than two minutes apart.  Jordan Fader (Rice Lake, Wis./) put the lead at 3-1 on helpers from Drew McLean (Waterford, Mich./) and Danny Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz./) at 5:36.  At 7:30 of the second, Carter Roo (Champlin, Minn./) gave UWSP a 4-1 lead with McLean adding another assist, this time on the power play.

Midway through the frame, UWS got within 4-2, but the scoring was far from over.  Zech pushed the Pointers advantage to 5-2 at the 16:45 mark.  Roo and McElhenie had assists.  The Yellowjackets scored three times in the final 1:24 of the period to send the game to the third period, tied at 5-5.

Neither team could break the tie in the third and the game went to overtime.  Fifteen seconds in, the Pointers got a power play.  Zech scored 17 seconds later with the power-play game-winner.

Eli Billing (Windsor, Ont./) made 32 saves in the win.  UWS goaltenders Myles Hektor and Nick Althaus combined for 22 saves.

The Pointers and Yellowjackets closed out the season series on Saturday (Feb. 1) at K.B. Willett Arena.  Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.  The game will feature the annual TV raffle sponsored by Scaffiti and fans will have the opportunity to "Skate with the Pointers" after the game.
