EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Senior
Brennen Miller (Keller, Texas/) scored with 1:11 left in regulation as the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (9-6-2, 3-2-2) salvaged a 3-3 tie at No. 4 UW-Eau Claire (12-3-2, 4-2-1) on Wednesday. It was UWSP's fourth game in the last five against top-5 nationally ranked teams with the Pointers going 4-0-1 in that span.
Fellow senior
Logan Fredericks (Millstone Township, N.J./) gave the Pointers a 1-0 late in the first period.
Jake Theis (Chanhassen, Minn./) and
Brandon McReynolds (North Vancouver, B.C./) picked up assists on the goal at 17:35.
Steven Quagliata (Bartlett, Ill./) doubled UWSP's lead 2:37 into the second period.
Jordan Fader (Rice Lake, Wis./) and
Austin Kelly (Toledo, Ohio/) assisted on the goal.
Just over five minutes later, UWEC got on the board and UWSP held a one-goal lead until 13 minutes into the third period. A bad turnover gave the Blugolds the tying goal at 13:08 of the third. Less than a minute later, UWEC took a 3-2 lead.
With 1:18 remaining and an offensive zone faceoff, UWSP pulled the goalie for the extra attacker. Just seven seconds later, Miller buried the equalizer on assists from Kelly and
Zach Zech (South Lyon, Mich./).
UWSP goaltender
Eli Billing (Windsor, Ont./) atoned for the regulation miscue with a huge save on a UWEC breakaway in overtime as the teams finished in a 3-3 tie. Billing made 27 saves while UWEC goaltender Zach Dyment had 23 saves.
The Pointer return home for a two-game home weekend series against UW-River Falls. Puck drop in slated for 7:00 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 24) and Saturday (Jan. 25) at K. B. Willett Arena.
