STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (7-10, 2-4) fell behind for good in the second quarter and were unable to recover in a 64-59 loss to visiting UW-Oshkosh (10-7, 3-3) on Wednesday in Berg Gym.
Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) tied for the game-high with 19 points to lead the Pointers' offense.
Amber Baehman (Plainfield, Wis./Tri-County) and
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) were also in double-figure scoring with 13 and 11, respectively. Baehman led UWSP with nine rebounds.
After falling behind 5-0, a basket by
Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) and consecutive three-pointers by Collins and Cerrato gave the Pointers an 8-5 lead. A late free throw by
Jessica Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) gave UWSP a brief 9-8 edge, but the Pointers trailed 10-9 after one.
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) snapped a 14-0 run by the Titans with a layup 3:43 before halftime and completed the and-one on the play.
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) and
Grace Myklebust (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) added field goals, but UWSP trailed 29-20 at the half.
Collins and Baehman accounted for UWSP's first 10 point of the third. UWSP kept chipping away at the deficit and a free throw by Collins with 29 seconds left got UWSP within two.
UWO's Karsyn Rueth hit four three-pointers in less than four minutes to push UWSP back into a double figure hole early in the fourth. Collins sandwiched a 9-0 run by the Pointers with baskets as UWSP got back within a possession with four minutes to go. Consecutive makes by UWO sparking an 8-2 run was too much for UWSP to overcome in the final seconds.
The Pointers travel to UW-Stout on Saturday (Jan. 25) for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off against the Blue Devils.
