Roo Nets Hat Trick as Men’s Hockey Opens 2020 with Win

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Junior Carter Roo (Champlin, Minn./) recorded his first career hat trick as the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (8-6-1) defeated visiting Hamline (2-10-3) by a 5-2 final to open the 2020 portion of the schedule.
 
Roo opened the scoring just 5:59 into the first period on an assist from Brennen Miller (Keller, Texas/).  He scored again on the power play 1:19 into the second period to put UWSP ahead 2-1.  Drew McLean (Waterford, Mich./) and Luke McElhenie (Sauk City, Wis./) added assists.
 
Hamline broke through at 8:43 of the second period to cut the Pointers' advantage to 2-1. 
 
Less than a minute later, Roo completed his hat trick with Jake Theis (Chanhassen, Minn./) and Logan Fredericks (Millstone Township, N.J./) getting assists.  Miller increased the lead late in the second with a power-play tally at 18:24 on a helper from Kelly O'Brien (Detroit, Mich./).
 
Early in the third, Luke McElhenie (Sauk City, Wis./) scored his team-leading 11th of the season.  O'Brien added another assist with Wesley Ashley (Pittsburgh, Pa./) also assisting on the goal.
 
The Pipers scored at 3:11 of the third, but neither team scored the remainder of the game.
 
UWSP goaltender Eli Billing (Windsor, Ont./) made 15 saves for the win.  Sam Nelson made 38 saves for Hamline.
 
The Pointers close out non-conference play at home on Saturday (Jan. 11) against No. 5 Augsburg. Puck drop at K.B Willett Arena is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
