Pointers Beat Millikin, Take Tommies to Five

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (13-4) split a pair of matches on Saturday to close out the Pointers Invitational II.  UWSP beat Millikin (6-6) in straight sets (3-0) before falling to No. 18 St. Thomas (13-3) by a 3-2 score.
 
Senior April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) recorded a double-double with a game-high 30 kills, her second match of the year with at least 30 kills.  She added 14 digs for the double-double against St. Thomas.
 
Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) also had a double-double versus the Tommies.  She registered 47 assists and 12 digs.  Tara Emme (St. Nazianz, Wis./Valders) had 12 kills and a career-high nine digs against UST.
 
UWSP 3, Millikin 0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-23)
Maddie Lawson (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) had a kill in an early 5-0 run as UWSP pulled away for the win in the first set.  After the Pointers fell behind, 7-2, early, Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) served up three aces and Lawson had four kills as UWSP put together a 14-2 run to win the set.  The Pointers took an early advantage in the third set and averted the MU comeback with a pair of points to break a 23-23 tie.
 
UWSP 2, St. Thomas 3 (25-21, 21-25, 23-25, 26-24, 15-13)
Gehl had kills on the final five UWSP points as the Pointers took the first set with an 11-4 run.  Seniors Gehl and Emme powered the UWSP offense in the second set with four kills apiece, but the Tommies evened the match at 1-1.
 
Gehl had an ace and a kill in a late 7-0 run as UWSP tied the set at 19-19, but UST prevailed to take the set.  Gehl had four kills in a 6-1 run to put UWSP in front 21-18 and Megan Lau (Potter, Wis./Hilbert) send the match to a decisive fifth set with a set-clinching kill.
 
UWSP's seniors combined for six kills in the fifth set, but the Tommies eked out the victory with the final two points.
 
The Pointers conclude the home stand on Wednesday (Sept. 25) with a 7:00 p.m. Gold Out match against UW-Stout.
