STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (8-2) defeated St. Norbert (6-4) in an exciting five-set match and then swept Lawrence (1-10) going 2-0 on the night.
Senior
Tara Emme (St. Nazianz, Wis./Valders) got a career-high 18 kills against St. Norbert and had a total of 22 kills on the night. She also had 11 digs and two blocks over the two matches.
April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) come away with two double-doubles on the night against both St. Norbert and Lawrence totaling 25 kills and 32 digs. She also had five service aces and six blocks.
Junior
Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) had a double-double against St. Norbert with 50 assists and 12 digs totaling 75 assists for the night. Sophomore
Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) and freshman
Katie Albrecht (West Bend, Wis./East) both had double-figure digs on the night with 15 each.
UWSP 3. St. Norbert 2 (25-21, 16-25, 21-25, 25-19, 15-10)
Gehl started off the first set with two service aces followed by a kill from
Hailey Jarr (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer) putting the Pointers up, 4-1. Later in the set, back-to-back kills by Emme set the pace for the rest of the game as they went on to win the first set. A kill from Emme put the Pointers up 5-4 in the second set, but it was not enough as UWSP did not lead from then on.
In the third set, back-to-back kills from Emme helped get the Pointers on the right track. A service ace from
Mazie Nagel (Stratford, Wis./Stratford) tied the game, 19-all, but it was not enough as St. Norbert led the rest of the set. Gehl started off the fourth set with a kill followed by a service ace. Back-to-back kills from Emme and Lau put the Pointers ahead 17-13. Lau finished the set with a kill helping UWSP take the fourth set.
The Pointers trailed in the fifth set until
Maddie Lawson (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) put down a kill to tie it up 8-all. Kills by Gehl and Emme kept the Pointers on top as the set continued. A kill From Emme ended the match as the Pointers took down St. Norbert in a five-set match.
UWSP 3, Lawrence 0 (25-6, 25-19, 25-11)
A kill from Gehl started the Pointers off in the first set. Back-to-back service aces from Lawson followed by a kill from
Taylor Keenan (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville Area) put the Pointers up 18-4 as they won the first set. Kills from Jarr and Adams followed by two service aces from Lawson put UWSP on top, 11-7, as they kept the lead for the rest of the second set. Back-to-back kills by Emme and Lau started the Pointers off strong in the third set. Nagel sealed the deal as she got the match point on a service ace ending the set, 25-11.
The Pointers next match will be on the road at the Bethel Invitational against the University of Minnesota Morris on Friday (Sep. 20) at 5:00 p.m.
