ST. PAUL, Minn. – UW-Stevens Point volleyball's
April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) recorded a season-high 33 kills and moved into second in school history as the Pointers (9-2) rallied from a two-set deficit to win, 3-2 (24-26, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-6), over Minnesota Morris (2-6) on Friday at the Bethel Invitational.
Gehl also had a season-high 21 digs in her fourth-consecutive double-double. With her 33 kills, she now has 1,423 in her career, surpassing Sarah Kuhl (1,409) for second in program history.
Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) registered her seventh double-double of the season with 51 assists and 16 digs.
Megan Lau (Potter, Wis./Hilbert) added a career-high 15 kills.
Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) led the Pointers with 27 digs in the match.
Mazie Nagel (Stratford, Wis./Stratford) served up two aces and had a kill during an 8-0 run as UWSP took a 12-5 lead in the first set. The Cougars responded late with their own eight-point spurt to take the first set. The Pointers used a 7-0 burst in the middle of the second set, but UMM prevailed late to take a 2-0 lead.
Gehl had seven kills in the third set, but it took a service ace from
Tara Emme (St. Nazianz, Wis./Valders) and consecutive late kills by Lau for the Pointers rally from a 21-19 hole to win the set. Gehl added nine more kills in the fourth set, including a span of five-straight UWSP point, and capped the set win with her ninth.
Gehl opened the fifth set with a kill and
Hailey Jarr (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer) and Lau each powered down two kills as UWSP got off to a fast start, 5-2. Adams had a pair of service aces in a 5-0 run and, fittingly, Gehl ended the match with a kill.
The Pointers face Luther and St. Olaf on Saturday (Sept. 14) at the Bethel Invitational with matches at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m., respectively.
