UWSP Volleyball Sweeps DePauw, Ninth-Ranked Chicago on Opening Day

CHICAGO, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (2-0) completes a pair of impressive sweeps on opening day taking down DePauw (0-1) and No. 9 Chicago (1-1) in straight-set victories.
 
Senior April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) piled up 27 kills and 27 digs over the six sets on the day.  She picked up a double-double against the Maroons.
 
Junior Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) had 40 assists against Chicago and 67 total on the day.  She had a double-double against the Maroons adding 12 digs.
 
Fellow junior Jamie Schmitz (Cashton, Wis./Cashton) had a career-best 11 kills against Chicago.  Freshman Mazie Nagel (Stratford, Wis./Stratford) and sophomore Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) each had double-figure digs against DePauw with 11 and 10, respectively.

Back-to-back kills by Gehl and Maddie Lawson (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) broke a 10-10 tie and UWSP held off the Tigers to take the first set.  Three early service aces, two by Nagel, powered UWSP to a 9-1 advantage and the Pointers rolled to a 2-0 lead.  Hailey Jarr (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer) had a late kill in a 5-0 run and Gehl ended the match with a kill for a sweep by UWSP.
 
UWSP 3, #9 Chicago 0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-20)
Senior Tara Emme (St. Nazianz, Wis./Valders) had a kill and a block in a 5-0 run as UWSP pulled ahead, 19-15, en route to a first-set win.  Lawson and Jarr each had a block as UWSP broke a 19-all tie with six of the final eight points in the set two victory.  Kills by Schmitz and Gehl gave UWSP a 10-8 edge and the Pointers didn't trail thereafter in the sweep of the Maroons.
 
The Pointers close out the weekend in Chicago with an 11:00 a.m. match against UT Dallas on Saturday (Aug. 31).
