STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (12-13-1, 0-3-1) battled the No. 23-ranked UW-Eau Claire Blugolds (14-3-1, 1-0-1) twice in Saturday's doubleheader. In game one, UWSP fell, 9-6, in eight innings. In game two, Lauren's Luedtke's two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh helped the Pointers rally and the game was called due to darkness after nine innings, tied 6-6.
Luedtke totaled five RBI on the day and scored a run in each game. She collected four hits over the two games, including three in game two.
Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South),
Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) and
Haley Barnes (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) each had a trio of hits on the day. Cohen scored three times and had an RBI. Buerger scored twice and Barnes added a run and an RBI.
Game 1 – UWSP 6, UWEC 9 (8)
The Pointers found themselves in a 5-0 hole after the Blugolds scored once in the second, twice in the third and two more times in the fourth.
In the fifth, Cohen started the inning with a single. Two batters later,
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) was hit by a pitch to put two aboard. With two away, Luedtke doubled to get UWSP on the board.
UWEC got the run back in the sixth, but it didn't deter the Pointers' comeback efforts.
In the bottom of the sixth, back-to-back errors by UWEC put two on and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Cohen singled to drive in one and another came in to score on a wild pitch as Buerger drew a walk. A sac fly by Candre pushed home another to make it 6-4.
Madi Greenaberg (Downers Grove, Ill./North) singled to begin the UWSP seventh. Luedtke drew a walk and Barnes singled to load the bases with one away.
Jordyn Hynst (West Bend, Wis./East) drew a base on balls to push home a run.
Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) followed with a sac fly to tie the game and send it to extras.
In the eighth, UWEC scored three times on four hits, including a home run, to pull out the game one victory.
Game 2 – UWSP 6, UWEC 6 (9)
UWSP jumped ahead in the first inning. Buerger drew a one-out walk and Candre singled. With two outs, Luedtke drove home two with a double. Consecutive RBI doubles by Johnson and Barnes gave UWSP a 4-0 lead.
The Blugolds got three runs back in the second and scored three more in the third to take a 6-4 advantage.
The score remained 6-4 until the bottom of the seventh. Cohen and Buerger singled back-to-back to begin the innings. Then with two outs, Luedtke drilled a single into the right field corner and both runners crossed the plate to tie the game at 6-6.
UWSP had a chance to walk off with the win in the eighth, but were held without a run and stranded the bases loaded.
Barnes and
Anna Palicka (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) combined to hold the Blugolds without a run over the final six innings to earn the tie.
The Pointers travel to Mequon for a non-conference doubleheader against Concordia on Tuesday (April 9). First pitch against the Falcons is slated for 3:00 p.m.
