Pointers Swept at Platteville by Run-Rule, Walk-Off

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens point softball team (12-15-1, 0-5-1) was unable to hold a lead in game two and suffered a sweep at the hands of UW-Platteville (11-12, 2-2) on Saturday.  The Pointers lost by run-rule, 12-2 in five innings in game one, and the Pioneers walked off with a 5-4 win in game two.

Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) led the Pointers with a pair of hits in each game.  She had three RBI and scored a run for the Pointers.

Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) collected three hits, all in game two.  She also drew a walk and scored a run.

Game 1 – UWSP 2, UWP 12 (5)
Cohen led off the game with a single, but made it as far as third base before the inning ended.

The Pioneers got on the board in the second inning with a run on two hits.  In the third, UWP blew the game open with eight runs on five hits and a UWSP error.  The Pioneers added three more runs in the fourth on two hits.

The Pointers got consecutive walks from Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna) and Sophie Lee (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) to begin the fifth.  A pair of groundouts pushed home the first run.  Then with two outs, Cohen singled to plate another before the game ended.

Game 2 – UWSP 4, UWP 5
Luedtke began the game with a double.  Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) drew a walk and a fielder's choice allowed the first run to cross the plate.  Cohen doubled to plate another run and after a groundout moved her to third, Cohen stole home for a 3-0 lead.

Cohen singled with one out in the third.  After a groundout moved her into scoring position, she scored on an RBI single by Madi Greenaberg (Downers Grove, Ill./North).

The Pioneers scored twice in the fourth and two more times in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4.  In the bottom of the seventh, a leadoff solo home run gave UWP a sweep.

Cohen pitched 6.0 innings and struck out seven in a no-decision.

The Pointers travel to River Falls on Saturday (April 20) for a 12:00 p.m. twin bill against the Falcons.
