MENOMONIE, Wis. – Sophomore
Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) recorded five hits on Sunday, but the UW-Stevens Point baseball team (14-18, 6-12) dropped both games in the series-opening twin bill at UW-Stout (16-15, 10-12) on Sunday.
Simmons had three hits in game one with two runs batted in. In game two, he added two more hits, including his school record eighth triple of the year.
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) added three hits over the twin bill.
Nate Jackan (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) had two hits and scored twice in game one.
Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) also had a pair of hits with an RBI and a runs scored in the first game.
Game 1 – UWSP 4, Stout 12
The Blue Devils scored four times on four hits in the third inning to take the lead on UWSP. Stout added two more runs in the fourth on two hits.
Jackan singled to begin the fifth and stole second. Two batters later, Duddleston singled to put runners at the corners.
Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) followed with a single to get the Pointers on the board. After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, Simmons hit a single to drive both runs in to cut the deficit in half, 6-3.
The Pointers got another run back in the sixth with two walks, two hits and an RBI groundout by Duddleston.
Stout tallied six runs in the seventh on five hits to put the game out of reach.
Game 2 – UWSP 0, Stout 5
Stout scored twice in the third to on a pair of hits to break a scoreless tie. The Blue Devils scored again in the sixth and twice in the seventh to complete the scoring.
UWSP had a runner on in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth to no avail. In the eighth, Simmons hit his record-setting triple with two down.
Matthew Morgan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) made his second career start and last six innings with four strikeouts.
Mitchel Neubauer (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door) tossed the final two frames with two more strikeouts.
The Pointers and Blue Devils wrap up the series on Monday (April 29) with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader in Menomonie.
