MENOMONIE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (14-20, 6-14) came up short in the series finale twin bill as UW-Stout (18-15, 12-12) finished a four-game sweep of the Pointers. UWSP fell in game one, 4-2, and lost game two, 2-1.
Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) continued to assault opposing pitching with a pair of hits in each game, his 16th multi-hit game of the season. He scored UWSP's lone run in game two.
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West),
Will Iloncaie (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) and
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) each hit safely in both games. Comer had an RBI in game two and scored a run in game one.
Game 1 – UWSP 2, Stout 4
The Blue Devils worked three walks and a single into a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
Comer singled with one away in the fourth and stole second base.
Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) was hit with a pitch. With two outs,
Gabe Affeldt (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) hit a double to plate both runners for a 2-2 tie.
UW-Stout regained the lead in the sixth with an unearned run on two hits and a UWSP error. The Blue Devils tacked on another in the eighth to complete the scoring.
UWSP pitchers
Zack Haupt (Carlsbad, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) and
Tristan Brewer (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) combined for eight strikeouts in the game.
Game 2 – UWSP 1, Stout 2
Simmons and Nelson hit back-to-back singles to begin the game. Both runners moved into scoring position on a groundout. Comer followed with an RBI groundout to give UWSP a 1-0 lead.
The advantage was short-lived as Stout scored two runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the first.
The Pointers had runners on in all-but-one inning the remainder of the game, but were unable to push home the tying run.
Austin Syvertson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) pitched 7.0 innings with six strikeouts.
Alex Stodola (Coleman, Wis./Coleman) pitched a hitless eighth.
The Pointers close out the season with a four-game series at league leader, UW-Whitewater on Friday (May 3) and Saturday (May 4). Games times are slated for 1:00 p.m. and 12:00 p.m., respectively. UWSP will look to play spoiler after being eliminated from conference tournament contention with Monday's sweep.
