STEVENS POINT, Wis. – For the first time since 2005, the UW-Stevens Point softball team (17-18-1, 3-8-1) swept a doubleheader from UW-Oshkosh (19-13, 5-5). UWSP walked off with a 2-1 win in game one and run-ruled the Titans in five innings in game two, 10-2. It was the first home sweep of UWO since 2002.
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) had a pair of hits in each game, including her first career home run. She scored both runs in the game one victory. She scored a third in game two.
Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) hit her second home run of the season in game two, a two-run shot.
Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) drove in three runs in game two with two hits and a run scored.
Game 1 – UWSP 2, UWO 1
The Titans scored in the first inning on a two-out single to take a 1-0 lead.
Candre hit the first pitch of the bottom of the first to the opposite field and it skittered off the top of the fence and out for her first career home run to tie the game, 1-1.
The scored remained tied until the seventh.
Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) singled and was replaced at first by Candre on a fielder's choice. Candre stole second and moved to third on a single by
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira). Cohen grounded to second and Candre slid under the tag of the catcher for the game-winning run.
Cohen pitched the first four innings with three strikeouts.
Haley Barnes (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) pitched the final three frames with just one hit allowed to earn the victory.
Game 2 – UWSP 10, UWO 2 (5)
The Titans again took a first inning lead on a solo home run by the leadoff batter.
Candre started the bottom of the first with a single and a UWO error put two aboard. Cohen bunted both runners into scoring position. Buerger followed with a two-run single to give UWSP a 2-1 lead.
The Titans tied the game at 2-2 in the second and it remained tied until the bottom of the third.
Candre had another hit and Cohen drew a one-out walk to put two runners on. Buerger doubled to plate a run.
Madi Greenaberg (Downers Grove, Ill./North) singled to drive in another. A passed ball and a wild pitch allowed both runners to score for a 6-2 lead.
Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna) and Barnes drew consecutive walks.
Anna Palicka (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) singled to drive in another run as the lead grew to 7-2.
In the fourth, Luedtke singled and Cohen belted a two-run home run to left for a 9-2 lead. Johnson singled with two down and Barnes ripped a double to the wall in left-center as Johnson circled the bases for the 10-2 advantage.
Palicka pitched a complete game two-hitter for her eighth win of the year. She struck out six.
The Pointers travel to UW-Stout on Saturday (April 27) to close out league play. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
