MENOMONIE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (17-20-1, 3-10-1) was swept by UW-Stout (18-17, 7-7) in the team's conference finale series on Sunday. UWSP fell by a 7-0 score in game one and 5-2 in game two.
Freshman
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) had four hits on the day and drove in one of the two runs. Fellow freshmen
Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) and
Haley Barnes (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) had two hits and the other RBI, respectively.
Game 1 – UWSP 0, Stout 7
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first after UWSP stranded the bases loaded without scoring in the top of the inning.
The Pointers got two aboard in the fourth on a hit by
Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna) and
Jordyn Hynst (West Bend, Wis./East) was hit with a pitch for the second time in the game. However, both runners remained stranded and UW-Stout added a run in the bottom of the inning.
UWSP got runners on in the fifth, sixth and seventh, but came away without a run in any of the innings.
Game 2 – UWSP 2, Stout 5
Candre and
Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) each singled in the first, but UWSP left two stranded without a run scored.
The Blue Devils turned two hits into a run in the bottom of the inning as UWSP played from behind early.
Stout tacked on a run in the third and scored three times in the fifth.
In the seventh,
Madi Greenaberg (Downers Grove, Ill./North) drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Anna Palicka (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) singled to put runners at the corners with one out. Barnes singled to get UWSP on the board. Then with two away, Candre singled to plate another, but UWSP couldn't push home any more runs
The Pointers end the season with 17 wins, the most since the 2013 season. Candre stole 18 bases, second is school history for a single season. As a team, UWSP swiped 60 bases, also the second-most in school history.
