RIVER FALLS, Wis. – Senior
Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna) hit a two-out, two-run single in the seventh inning of game two as the UW-Stevens Point softball team (15-16-1, 1-6-1) earned its first league win in comeback fashion. The Pointers won, 4-3, over UW-River Falls (7-19, 1-7) in game two. The Falcons took game one by a 1-0 score.
Johnson's hit was her only base knock of the day.
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) had a hit in each game, recording UWSP's lone hit in game one.
Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) went 2-for-3 in game two with an RBI and a run scored.
Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) also had a pair of hits in game two and scored a run.
Anna Palicka (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) drove in a run and scored with a 1-for-2 outing in game two.
Game 1 – UWSP 0, UWRF 1
Luedtke led off the second inning with a single, but was stranded at second to end the frame.
The Falcons got a leadoff hit in the fourth. A fielder's choice put two on base and a sac bunt moved both runners into scoring position. A groundout scored a run, the difference in the game.
Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) pitched all six innings and gave up just three hits. She struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Game 2 – UWSP 4, UWRF 3
UWRF got three hits in the first four batters including a three-run home run to take a first-inning lead.
In the fourth inning, Buerger belted a two-out solo home run to get the Pointers on the board.
Palicka blasted a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning as UWSP got within 3-2.
In the seventh,
Madi Greenaberg (Downers Grove, Ill./North) singled to start the frame. With two outs, Wakefield doubled to move pinch runner
Sophie Lee (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) to third.
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) drew a walk to load the bases for Johnson. She singled to left to plate the tying and go-ahead run.
Cohen pitched the bottom of the seventh to record her second save of the season. Palicka pitched 5.2 to earn the win. She struck out two.
The Pointers travel to UW-La Crosse on Tuesday (April 23) in a rescheduled doubleheader from April 14. First pitch in La Crosse is set for 2:00 p.m.
