DE PERE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (14-15-1) put up 15 runs on offense and allowed the host St. Norbert Green Knights (16-12) just a single run as the Pointers swept a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday in De Pere. UWSP scored in each of the final four innings to take a 9-1 win in game one.
Haley Barnes (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) shut down the Green Knights to the tune of two hits in a 6-0 shutout win for UWSP in game two.
Sophomore
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) drove in two runs in each game and had four hits on the day. She scored three runs over the two games.
Freshman
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) had two hits in each game for the Pointers. She drove in three and scored three in the sweep.
Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna) and
Madi Greenaberg (Downers Grove, Ill./North) also had an RBI in game.
Game 1 – UWSP 9, SNC 1
UWSP broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning as a
Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) triple with one away broke up a no-hit bid by the Green Knights. Candre followed with a single to put the Pointers up, 1-0.
In the fifth,
Jordyn Hynst (West Bend, Wis./East) doubled with two outs. Pinch runner
Natalie Coash (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) scored on a single by
Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Green Knights got their only run of the day in the fifth and the UWSP offense got right back to work. Buerger singled to lead off the sixth. A walk by Candre put two aboard and with two outs, Johnson singled to push home a run. With runners on the corners, a double steal pushed the lead to 4-1.
UWSP broke the game open in the seventh. Candre, Luedtke and Greenaberg drove in runs with hits as the Pointers scored five times on six hits to up the score to 9-1.
Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) pitched the first 5.0 frames and struck out three.
Anna Palicka (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) earned the save with 2.0 innings of shutout ball with another strikeout.
Game 2 – UWSP 6, SNC 0
Palicka started the UWSP third with a single and Cohen singled with one away. With two down, Candre drove in a run with a single. Luedtke continued the frame with an RBI single and gave UWSP a 2-0 lead.
Cohen began the fifth with a walk. A sac bunt by Buerger and a single by Candre put runners at the corners for Luedtke. She singled to plate a run. Greenaberg and Johnson followed with RBI hits and an RBI groundout by Hynst plated another for the 6-0 lead.
Barnes retired the side four times in her six innings and allowed just three base runners. Palicka pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to complete the shutout.
The Pointers travel to River Falls on Saturday (April 20) for a conference doubleheader against the Falcons. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
