Pointers Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season in De Pere

DE PERE, Wis. - Cold winds and mid-30's temperatures didn't stop the UW-Stevens Point track and field team from making its outdoor season debut at the St. Norbert Early Bird Invitational.  The Pointers picked up second-place finishes with scores of 166 and 217, between women and men, respectively.
 
Results
 
Karen Wethal (Evansville, Wis./Evansville) picked up a pair of wins in the shot put and discus events.  She threw a distance of 12.65 meters (41' 6") in the shot put. She then launched a distance of 42.24 meters (138' 7") in the discus. 
 
Larkin Hoepner (Eau Claire, Wis./North) made herself known in the hammer throw.  She won the event with a convincing distance of 51.01 meters, 11.11 meters farther than the runner-up from Northern Michigan. 
 
Don't forget about former 2018 NCAA Outdoor All-American Alex Grubbs (Minong, Wis./Spooner) as she made her return to outdoor track and field.  The javelin thrower won the event with a distance of 38.61 meters (126' 8"), 9.94 meters farther than the runner-up. 
 
Georgia Harrison (West Bend, Wis./East) won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:25.50. 
 
Sam Carriveau (West De Pere, Wis./West De Pere) and Lydia Ulrich (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) won and placed second in the long jump.  The pair leaped to distances of 5.33 (17' 6") and 5.09 meters (16' 8.5").
 
Brooke Wellhausen (Williams Bay, Wis./Big Foot) made her 1,500-meter debut.  She crossed the finish line with a time of 4:52.12, good for a second-place finish. 
 
Shannon Nelson (Franklin, Wis./Oak Creek) placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.73. 
 
Caitlin Falk (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) and Elle Maculan (Rockford, Ill./Auburn) placed third and fifth in the 400-meter hurdles.  The pair earned times of 1:09.31 and 1:13.67. 
 
Mariah Nelson (Poplar, Wis./Northwestern) and Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) earned third- and fourth-place finishes in the pole vault.  The pair finished with heights of 2.85 and 2.70 meters. 
 
Kathleen Reilly (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) and Haley Slusar (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) placed among the top-10 in the 400-meter dash.  The pair earned times of 1:05.51 and 1:07.23. 
 
Blake Orr (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca) and Caleb Rheinschmidt (Nekoosa, Wis./Nekoosa) finished first and second in the shot put with distances of 14.62 (47' 11.75") and 14.22 meters (46' 8").  Orr also won the discus throw with 43.86 meters (143' 11").  Rheinschmidt also picked up the hammer crown with a distance 51.39 meters (168' 7").
 
Matthew Miller (Hillsboro, Wis./Kickapoo) won the javelin throw with a distance of 44.45 meters (145' 10").
 
Jared Schrang (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) and Quinn Brownell (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) outran two athletes from Michigan Tech, a Division II college, with first- and second-place finishes in the 400-meter hurdles.  The pair hurdled to times of 57.08 and 58.75. 
 
Alex Egbert (La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas) represented distance runners with a convincing statement winning the 800-meter run crown.  He won the event with a time of 2:00.01. 
 
The 4x100-meter relay team won the event with a time of 45.48. 
 
Damontae Dewitt (Gilmanton, Wis./Gilmanton) won the high jump with a height of 1.75 meters (5' 8.75"). 
 
Alex Jochman (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna) also made a statement with a win in the pole vault.  He vaulted to a height of 4.45 meters (14' 7.25"), which earned him his second-collegiate win since the 2018 Pointer Alumni Open. 
 
Bryce Richards (Mundelein,Wis./Mundelein) made his Pointer outdoor debut in the 5,000-meter run.  He added to distance runner's success with a fourth-place finish with a time of 16:11.07, which was faster by approximately eight seconds over Michigan Tech's athlete. 
 
Distance runners continued to be represented in the 1,500-meter run with Bret Hilliard (Morton. Ill./Morton) and Axel Treinen (Wausau, Wis./East).  Hilliard and Treinen earned a fourth- and fifth-place finish with times of 4:10.55 and 4:11.14. 
 
Andrew Haffelder (Jefferson, Wis./Jefferson) and Lucas Lee (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) earned fifth and sixth place in the 100-meter dash.  The pair earned times of 11.62 and 11.64. 
 
Vincent Jolliffe (Wausau, Wis./East) and Sam Krebsbach (Waterford, Wis./Waterford) earned top-10 finishes in the 400-meter dash.  The pair earned times of 54.66 and 55.04, good for eighth- and ninth-place finishes. 
 
The Pointers head to La Crosse for the Ashton May Invite hosted by UW-La Crosse on Saturday (April 6).  First events are slated to begin at 11:00 a.m.
