CLERMONT, Fla. – Freshman
Haley Barnes (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) threw her second no-hitter of the week as the UW-Stevens Point softball team (7-7) swept a pair of games on Thursday. Barnes' no-no was a five-inning, 8-0 shutout of St. Lawrence (7-3). In game two, UWSP took care of Lawrence (1-8) in five innings, 10-2.
In game one, Barnes struck out six with just one walk and a hit by pitch in the no-hitter. It was her second no-no of the week after no-hitting Wesleyan on Monday.
Offensively, senior
Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna) collected a pair of hits in each game. She drove in three runs and scored three times on the day.
Game 1 – UWSP 8, St. Lawrence 0 (5)
Johnson started a two-out rally in the third with a single up the middle. She stole second and
Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) drew a walk.
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) tripled to center plating both runners.
Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) followed with a triple of her own for an RBI.
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) capped the scoring with an RBI single to put UWSP ahead, 4-0.
In the fourth, Barnes drew a leadoff walk. Pinch runner
Halle Vardon (Algoma, Wis./Algoma) stole second and moved to third on a groundout.
Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) picked up an RBI with a sac fly to right for a 5-0 advantage.
A St. Lawrence error in the fifth opened the door for a big inning. Cohen singled to put runners on the corners. Luedtke drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
Madi Greenaberg (Downers Grove, Ill./North) singled to load the bases and Barnes plated two with a double for the 8-0 lead.
Barnes capped the no-hitter with a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth, included consecutive strikeouts to end the game.
Game 2 – UWSP 10, Lawrence 2 (5)
UWSP jumped all over Lawrence in the first inning. The Pointers sent 13 batters to the plate and scored nine runs on five hits. Johnson singled and tripled in the inning, driving in three runs. Greenaberg had three RBI with a double with Wakefield and Candre also driving home a run in the inning.
The Vikings got a run in the third, but the Pointers got it right back in the fourth. Buerger singled to lead off. Then with two down, Luedtke doubled to score Buerger.
Lawrence scored a single run in the fourth, but UWSP completed the run-rule victory.
Anna Palicka (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) earned the win with 4.0 innings pitched. She recorded four strikeouts. Barnes pitched a hitless fifth inning to close out the game.
The Pointers close out the Florida trip on Friday (March 22) against Plattsburgh State and Albright. Game one is slated to begin at 8:30 a.m. CT.
