Softball Closes Out Florida Trip With Sweep

CLERMONT, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (9-7) closed out their Florida trip with two come-from-behind victories on Friday. The Pointers defeated Plattsburgh State, 7-5, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn the win. In the second game of the day, UWSP scored two runs in the top of the seventh to beat Albright College, 5-4.
 
Freshman Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) drove in four runs against Plattsburgh and collected hits in each game.
 
Fellow freshmen Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) and Madi Greenaberg (Downers Grove, Ill./North) each added two hits in each game. Buerger scored six runs and had an RBI. Greenaberg had an RBI and scored two runs.
 
Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) went 2-for-3 against the Lions with two runs driven in.
 
Game One – UWSP 7, Plattsburgh State 5
The Cardinals jumped on the board first, scoring two runs in the top of the first on one hit and two walks.
 
The Pointers cut the deficit to one, scoring one run in the bottom of the first. Buerger doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout to the shortstop.
 
Plattsburgh State added two more runs in the top half of the second on one hit and one error.
 
Again, UWSP got one run back in the bottom of the inning. Greenaberg reached on a fielding error by the shortstop and advanced to second when Haley Barnes (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) walked. Jordyn Hynst's (West Bend, Wis./East) RBI double to center scored Greenaberg.
 
Following a scoreless third and fourth innings, the Cardinals and Pointers traded runs in the fifth. Plattsburgh increased their lead to 5-2, scoring one run on three hits and one error.
 
Buerger lead off the bottom of the fifth with a walk and moved to second on a groundout to the second baseman. Two wild pitches allowed Buerger to advance to third and then score.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, back-to-back singles by Greenaberg and Barnes put runners on first and second to lead off the inning. With two outs, Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna) singled to load the bases. Buerger singled to shortstop to drive in the game-tying run and Candre doubled to left field to bring home the go-ahead runs.
Barnes tossed 4.2 innings allowing four earned runs on seven hits. Anna Palicka (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) earned the win, pitching 2.2 innings with two strikeouts. 
 
Game Two – UWSP 5, Albright 4
The Pointers opened the game scoring one run on four hits. With one out, Buerger singled to center and stole second. She moved to third on a groundout and scored on an RBI single from Cohen.
 
The Lions took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning, plating two runs on two hits.
 
UWSP and Albright traded runs in the third and fifth innings.
 
In the third, Buerger doubled to right center, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Cohen's second RBI single of the game.
 
The top of the fifth saw Buerger again get on base to lead off the inning. A single by Candre put runners on first and second. A sacrifice bunt from Cohen moved both runners into scoring position. Buerger scored on a sacrifice fly from Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira).
 
In the top of the seventh, Luedtke walked with one out. Greenaberg doubled to right center to bring home Luedtke and tie the game, 4-4. Pinch hitter Palicka's RBI double to right field scored Greenaberg to take a 5-4 lead.
 
Palicka struck out three in 3.0 innings. Barnes threw 4.0 innings in relief to pick up the win, striking out two.
 
The Pointers return to action on Wednesday (Mar. 27) for the home opener against Lakeland. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
