Pointers Unable to Dig Out of Early Hole

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (6-3) fell behind early and were unable to rally back in a 7-4 loss to Anderson (8-5).

Sophomore Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) continued his red-hot start to the season with three hits in the game.  He drove in a run and scored once.

Senior Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) drew a pair of walks and scored twice. Bradley Hansen (Racine, Wis./Union Grove) and Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) each had a pair of hits in the game.

The Ravens turned three hits and walk into three runs in the bottom of the first.  Anderson added a run in the second as UWSP trailed 4-0.

Duddleston began the Pointers' third with a single to right.  After a caught stealing, Mrozinski drew a walk.  Simmons singled and a hit by pitch loaded the bases.  An RBI groundout by Ryan Stanicek (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) got UWSP on the board.

In the fifth, it was Duddleston again sparking a rally with a leadoff single.  Mrozinski walked again and Simmons drove in a run.  Consecutive walks to Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) and Stanicek loaded the bases.  Two batters later, Nolan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) drew a walk, but UWSP stranded the bases loaded and were down, 4-3.

The Ravens turned a UWSP error into two runs on a pair of doubles in the fifth.  In the sixth, Anderson added a single tally on two hits.

Simmons led off the seventh with a single and Nelson doubled to put two in scoring position with no outs.  A walk to Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) loaded the bases and Matson drove in a run on a fielder's choice.

UWSP had a runner on in both the eighth and the ninth, but couldn't push in a run in either frame.

Alex Stodola (Coleman, Wis./Coleman) started and struck out five in 4.1 innings.  Tristan Brewer (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) tossed 1.2 and got a strikeout.  Mitchel Neubauer (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door) pitched the final 2.0 and recorded three strikeouts.

The Pointers wrap up the Florida trip on Friday (March 22) against St. Olaf.  First pitch is set for 9:00 a.m. CT.
