Big Innings Propel UWSP Softball to Sweep in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (5-7) used a big inning in each game to pull off a sweep in Florida on Tuesday.  UWSP scored seven times in the fourth inning to rally back for a 9-8 win over Macalester (5-6) in the first game of the day.  In game two, the Pointers put up six runs in the third for a 6-3 victory over Stevenson (3-6).
 
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) collected five hits over the two games. She drove in four runs and scored a run in each game.
 
Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South), Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) and Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) each added three hits and drove in a run. Candre scored two runs in UWSP's win over Macalester. Buerger scored a run in each game and Cohen scored in UWSP's win over Stevenson.
 
Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna) and Madi Greenaberg (Downers Grove, Ill./North) had two hits against Macalester. Greenaberg had two RBI and scored a run. Johnson scored two runs.
 
Anna Palicka (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) went 2-for-3 against the Mustangs with two runs driven in.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 9, Macalester 8
Johnson led off the game with a single, stole second and moved to third on a single by Cohen. Luedtke gave UWSP a 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI single.
 
Macalester registered three consecutive singles to begin the third. The Scots scored four times in the inning on five hits, a walk and a UWSP error.
 
Macalester extended its lead in the fourth with four runs on four hits.
 
Luedtke singled to start the bottom of the fourth. Greenaberg singled and both runners moved into scoring position on a groundout. Jordyn Hynst (West Bend, Wis./East) doubled to drive home two runs. Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and Johnson singled to load the bases. Buerger and Candre singled to drive in a run each. With two away, Luedtke singled for the second time in the inning, driving in a run. Greenaberg followed with a two RBI single to tie the game at 8-8.
 
Candre started the sixth with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by Chen.  She stole third and scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run on an RBI groundout by Luedtke.
 
Haley Barnes (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) tossed the first 3.2 innings with four strikeouts.  Cohen struck out the only batter she faced.  Palicka went 3.0 hitless frames to close the game and earn the win.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 6, Stevenson 3
After getting runners on in the first two innings and coming away empty-handed, the Pointers broke through in the third.  Wakefield started the frame with a walk and came in to score on a double by Johnson.  Buerger singled and two batters later, Cohen drove in a run with a single.  Luedtke followed with an RBI single. After a Mustangs' error loaded the bases, Palicka singled to plate two runs. Hynst walked to re-load the bases and a sac fly by Wakefield gave UWSP a 6-0 lead.
 
Stevenson strung three hits together in the fourth to score a run.  The Mustangs added single tallies in the fifth and seventh, but the Pointers held on for the win.
 
Palicka earned her second win of the day with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched.  Barnes added a strikeout in 2.0 innings to close the game.
 
UWSP faces St. Lawrence and Lawrence on Thursday (March 21). Game one first pitch is set to begin at 10:15 a.m. CT.
