Barnes No-Hits Wesleyan, UWSP Softball Splits in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – Freshman Haley Barnes (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) tossed her first career no-hitter as the UW-Stevens Point softball team (3-7) defeated Wesleyan (5-5) in five innings, 8-0.  The no-no by Barnes was the first for UWSP since 2015 when Sydney Gorges held Dubuque without a hit in an 8-0 win. The Pointers dropped game two to Hope (4-2) by a 5-1 score.

Fellow freshman Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) led the Pointers' offense with three hits on the day.  She scored twice in the win.

Senior Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna) collected a hit in each game and drew a walk on the day.  She drove in three runs in the victory.  Junior Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) also got a hit in each contest and drove in the lone run against Hope.

Game 1 – UWSP 8, Wesleyan 0 (5 innings)
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) began the UWSP second inning with a single.  After she was unsuccessful on a steal attempt, Madi Greenaberg (Downers Grove, Ill./North), Barnes and Jordyn Hynst (West Bend, Wis./East) each singled to load the bases.  Two batters later, Johnson reached on an error as two runs scored.

In the third, Candre led off with a triple.  The first of four Wesleyan errors in the inning followed as Candre scored.  After the second run of the inning came home, Johnson cleared the bases with a triple to give the Pointers a 7-1 lead.

Candre started a rally again in the fourth with a leadoff single.  She stole second and moved to third on a Cohen single.  Luedtke drove her in with a fielder's choice ground out to conclude the scoring.

Barnes retired the side in order in the fifth to complete the run-rule no-hitter.  She struck out two and issued two walks.

Game 2 – UWSP 1, Hope 5
Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the first.  Candre followed with a single and Cohen also singled to give UWSP a 1-0 lead.

Back-to-back singles for Hope in the third sparked a two-run innings.  The Flying Dutchmen had four hits in the inning, but Barnes come on to record the final out and strand the bases loaded.

In the fourth, Hope turned four walks and a hit into three runs for the 5-1 lead.

The Pointers had a chance to get back into the game in the sixth.  Johnson led off with a single and Buerger doubled.  Candre drew a walk to load the bases, but consecutive fielder's choice putouts at home kept UWSP off the board.

UWSP hits the diamond on Tuesday (March 19) beginning at 8:15 a.m. CT against Macalester.  The Pointers face Stevenson in game two; slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. CT.
