AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Senior
Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) hit his first home run of the season and powered the UW-Stevens Point baseball team (3-1) to a 7-2 win over Illinois Tech (1-2) on Saturday.
Mrozinski collected three hits in the game, including a double and a home run. He drove in two runs and scored two others.
Sophomore
Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) continued his offensive production with a double and two runs batted in. Junior
Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) registered two hits, including a double, scored a run and had an RBI.
Mrozinski got UWSP on the board in the bottom of the first as he hit the second pitch out to left for a home run.
He doubled with one down in the third. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, he scored on a double from Simmons. With two away in the inning,
Will Iloncaie (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) singled to push the Pointers' advantage to 3-0.
The Scarlet Hawks got single tallies in the fourth and the sixth inning to pull within one at 3-2.
In the UWSP sixth,
Jordan Carlson (Madison, Wis./Madison La Follette) reached on a error to start the frame.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) singled to advance pinch runner
Brett Nelson (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity). Another IIT error loaded the bases. Duddleston singled to push home a run and another scored on a wild pitch. Simmons drove in a run on a ground out to push the lead to 6-2.
Duddleston doubled with one out in the eighth. Mrozinski plated him with a single to make it 7-2.
Tristan Brewer (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) earned his first win of the year with 5.1 innings pitched. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Mitchel Neubauer (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door) recorded two strikeouts in 2.2 innings of relief, his pitching debut for UWSP.
Matthew Morgan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) pitched a hitless ninth and struck out a batter.
The Pointers face Endicott College on Sunday (March 17). First pitch is slated for 9:00 a.m. CT.
