Women’s Basketball Falls Short in Home Loss to UWW

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (8-14, 4-7) saw visiting UW-Whitewater (15-7, 8-3) widen its lead in the second and third quarters as the Pointers fell to the Warhawks, 70-58, on Wednesday.

Sophomore Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) led the Pointers with 12 points.  Fellow sophomores Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) and Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) were also in double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively.  Greenheck led UWSP with six rebounds.

Back-to-back made baskets by Schmidt gave the Pointers a 9-5 lead just under three minutes into the game.  Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) snapped a 6-0 UWW run with a bucket to tie the game at 11-11.  Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) nailed a three later in the quarter and UWSP trailed by just two, 18-16, after one.

Amber Baehman (Plainfield, Wis. /Tri-County) scored four early points in the second quarter as UWSP pulled ahead, 24-21.  Greenheck scored six points the remainder of the quarter, but a late 9-2 spurt gave the Warhawks a 40-32 lead at the half.

Baehman and Collins scored on consecutive possessions early in the third.  Greenheck buried a three at the 1:01 mark to snap a scoreless drought from the field that saw UWSP fall into a 57-41 hole.

Cerrato opened the fourth with a three-pointer as the Pointers scored the first five points of the period.  Following two free throws by Collins, Schmidt cut the deficit to single digits at 61-52.  The Pointers held the Warhawks scoreless from the field over the final 6:08 of the game, but the deficit and seven made free throws by Olivia Freckman sealed the win for UWW.

The Pointers remain at home on Saturday (Feb. 9) for Alumni Day and the annual Play4Kay Game.  Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support breast cancer awareness.
