Early Deficit Too Much for Women’s Basketball

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (8-15, 4-8) trailed by 10 at the end of the first quarter, but were only able to trim the deficit to seven by the end of the game in a 65-58 defeat to No. 11 UW-Oshkosh (20-3, 10-2) on Saturday.

Junior Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) led all players with 17 points in the game.  Sophomore Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) added 15 points.  Both tied Amber Baehman (Plainfield, Wis. /Tri-County) with four rebounds apiece to lead the Pointers.

The Titans opened the game on a 8-0 run before a jumper by Cerrato got UWSDP on the board.  UWO scored six-straight before Baehman scored with just over a minute left in the quarter for a 14-4 score.  Collins converted two free throws in the closing seconds, but UWSP was down, 16-6, at the end of one.

Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) got on the board early in the second, but a 10-4 spurt by the Titans put the deficit at 16 midway through the second quarter.  Greenheck buried a three and Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) scored in the final minute as UWSP trailed, 29-17, at the half.

Collins scored UWSP's first five points in the third as the Pointers tried to battle back.  Schmidt scored four-straight as UWSP cut the lead to 10.  Cerrato hit a pair of threes as she scored UWSP's next eight points, but UWO kept the lead in double digits.  The Pointers closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to trail by eight, 46-38, heading to the fourth.

Baehman drilled a three early in the fourth as UWSP continued to battle.  Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) tallied five-straight for the Pointers as the deficit was just eight in the middle of the fourth.  Cerrato completed an and-one and Collins scored four-consecutive, but the Titans' lead was double figures as the game entered the final minute.  The Pointers scored the final five points, but came up short, 65-58.

UWSP travels to UW-Stout on Wednesday (Feb. 13) for the final road game of the regular season.  Tip-off in Menomonie is set for 7:00 p.m.
