Pointers Get Comeback Tie Behind Big Contributions From Seniors

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (8-13-4, 1-6-2) erased a two-goal deficit and earned the three-seed in the conference tournament with a 2-2 tie against UW-Superior (7-16-2, 0-7-2) in the regular season finale on Friday.

The Yellowjackets scored in the opening period and again 20 seconds into the second period to put UWSP behind, 2-0.

Senior Cara Lemirande (Janesville, Wis./Madison Capitols) got the Pointers in the board with a power-play tally at the 8:56 mark of the second.  She tipped in a shot from fellow senior Lauren Smith (Antigo, Wis./Antigo).  Freshman Dani Heitsman (Janesville, Wis./Rock County Fury) also had an assist on the goal.  The power-play goal was Lemirande's 20th of her career, tying her for the most in school history with Nicole Grossman (2005-09).

At the 13:35 mark of the second, Alana Achterkirch (St. Michael, Minn./North Wright County) scored her third goal of the year to tie the game at 2-2.  Smith recorded her second assist of the night, her team-leading eighth of the season.

In the third period, senior goaltender Sydney Conley (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) made her biggest save of the night.  With 8:23 remaining, a Yellowjackets player had a breakaway and Conley came up big to preserve the tie.  She made 35 total saves in the game.

The Pointers locked up the three-seed in next week's WIAC Championship (presented by Culver's). UWSP will await the outcome of tomorrow's UWRF-UWEC game to see its opponent in the semifinals on Feb. 22 and 23.
