EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – For the second-straight night, the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (7-6-1, 3-2-1) knocked off the No. 1 team in the country, winning 3-0 at UW-Eau Claire (10-2-1, 4-2-0) on Saturday.
Sophomore goaltender
Eli Billing (Windsor, Ont./) made 36 saves to record his first career shutout. The 36 stops were a career-best for Billing.
Steven Quagliata (Bartlett, Ill./) put UWSP in front at 16:11 of the first period, his fourth goal of the year.
Carter Roo (Champlin, Minn./) recorded his third assist of the weekend on the play.
Late in the second period,
Drew McLean (Waterford, Mich./) ripped a shot from the point into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Zach Zech (South Lyon, Mich./) and
Danny Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz./) earned assists on the play.
The lead held at 2-0 until
Luke McElhenie (Sauk City, Wis./) scored an empty-net goal with 20 seconds left to seal the win.
The Pointers return home on Jan. 10 to face Hamline. Face-off at K.B. Willett Arena is set for 7:00 p.m.
