STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Despite never trailing, it took a late goal for No. 1 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey (2-1-0) to earn a 4-2 win over visiting Gustavus Adolphus College (2-1-0) on Friday.
Senior
Luke McElhenie (Sauk City, Wis./) put the Pointers up in the first period just under six minutes into the game.
Jordan Fader (Rice Lake, Wis./) and
Ryan MacKellar (Indianapolis, Ind./) added assists on the goal.
Early in the second, GAC was able to squeeze the puck past UWSP goaltender
Eli Billing (Windsor, Ont./) to knot the game at 1-1.
Following back-to-back major penalties, UWSP used the two-man advantage to take the lead again on a power-play goal from
Colin Raver (Bartlett, Ill./). Senior
Drew McLean (Waterford, Mich./) added an assist.
Late in the second, the Gusties again found the equalizer to send the game to the third, tied 2-2.
McElhenie struck again late in the third, netting the game-winner with just 1:23 left in regulation. In the final minute of play, Raver added an empty-netter to seal the win. MacKellar and
Austin Kelly (Toledo, Ohio/) got assists on the play.
Billing made 16 saves for the win. GAC goaltenders combined to stop 41 UWSP shots.
The Pointers close out the home weekend on Saturday (Nov. 9) at 7:00 p.m. versus St. Thomas.
