Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Pointers Upended by Tommies in Penalty-Filled Affair

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The officials garnered the spotlight in calling 22 penalties as the No. 1-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (2-2-0) came up short in a 4-3 loss against visiting St. Thomas (2-1-1) on Saturday.

Each team scored a goal on the power play, but a late even-strength goal by UST was the difference.

Danny Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz./) put the Pointers in front in the final minute of the first period.  He buried a nice feed from Luke McElhenie (Sauk City, Wis./).

The Tommies tied it up just 25 seconds into the second period.  A little more than eight minutes later, UST took its first lead.

The Pointers again struck late in the period as McElhenie netted his fifth of the season to knot the game at 2-2.  Zach Zech (South Lyon, Mich./) and Wesley Ashley (Pittsburgh, Pa./) set up McElhenie for the goal.

Senior Kelly O'Brien (Detroit, Mich./) put the Pointers in front at the 8:36 mark of the third with a power-play tally.  Steven Quagliata (Bartlett, Ill./) had an assist on the play.

The Tommies scored their own power-play goal at 13:58 to tie the game at 3-3.  Then with 1:52 left, UST put home the game-winner to upset the Pointers.

UWSP heads out on a four-game road trip beginning at Saint John's on Friday (Nov. 15) at 7:30 p.m.
