FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (3-0-0) scored a 7-1 win over Marian (0-1-0) as UWSP head coach
Ann Ninnemann won her 200th career game.
Freshman
Gina Magro (Tower Lakes, Ill./Barrington) got the Pointers on the board just 1:23 into the game, her second goal of the season. The host Sabres evened the game at 1-1 just over seven minutes later.
At the 13:44 mark,
Nicole Neuberger (Minnetrista, Minn./Orono) put the Pointers ahead for good with an unassisted tally. Less than a minute later,
Alana Achterkirch (St. Michael, Minn./North Wright County) scored on an assist from
Emma Berthiaume (South Haven, Minn./Hutchinson) to give UWSP a 3-1 lead after one.
McKenna Butcher (Sun Prairie, Wis./Madison Capitols) increased the lead to 4-1 with her first goal of the year 6:31 into the second period.
Sophie Regovic (Naperville, Ill./Chicago Mission) netted the fifth goal of the night for UWSP at 12:10 with
Mary Kremer (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead Warhawks) getting an assist.
Anna Cheney (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale) completed the second period scoring a power-play goal with 17 seconds left with Regovic getting an assist.
Early in the third period, Neuberger added her second goal of the night.
Dani Heitsman (Janesville, Wis./Rock County Fury) and
Alex Grubbs (Minong, Wis./Spooner) grabbed assists as the Pointers rolled to the 7-1 win.
Olivia Schultz (Maplewood, Minn./Tartan) made 23 saves for UWSP to earn the win. MU goaltender Lindsay Lewison turned aside 43 shots.
The Pointers travel to Minnesota to face St. Thomas in a pair of weekend games on Friday (Nov. 8) and Saturday (Nov. 9) with start times of 7:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively.
