NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (3-2) trailed almost the entire game, but had a potential game-winning shot at the buzzer in a 60-59 loss at North Central (3-2) on Saturday.
UWSP got team-highs of 12 points from both
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) and
Amber Baehman (Plainfield, Wis./Tri-County) off the bench. Both also had five rebounds.
Senior
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) poured in 11 and
Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) added 10 to complete the quartet of double-figure scorers.
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) contributed a team-best five assists and two blocks.
Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) and
Laynie Bessette (Manawa, Wis./Little Wolf) scored the Pointers' first six points of the game, but trailed the entire period. Baehman hit a three later in the first as UWSP stayed close at 21-18 after one.
Collins again scored UWSP's first points of the second quarter with a successful and-one. Freshmen Pfeifer and Bessette scored the eight other points of the quarter and UWSP was behind just three at the half, 32-29.
Pfeifer was the only Pointer to score in the first six minutes of the third quarter as the Cardinals pushed the deficit to nine.
Erin Moran (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) and Greenheck combined for six points as UWSP trailed by seven heading to the fourth.
Baehman and Cerrato heated up in the fourth with the first 10 points coming from the duo. Greenheck added five as the Pointers closed to within 56-54 with less than a minute remaining. Cerrato hit a three to cut the lead to one and Baehman made a layup with nine seconds left to do the same. An NCC turnover gave UWSP a shot at the game-winner, but Baehman's heave was no good.
The Pointers continue the three-game road trip at Carthage on Tuesday (Nov. 26). Tip-off in Kenosha is slated for 7:00 p.m.
