STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Nine different players scored as the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (3-1) won its home opener on Wednesday, 57-50, over visiting Lakeland (0-4).
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) led the Pointers with a game-high tying 10 points.
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) added nine and
Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) contributed eight.
Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) led all players with eight rebounds. She also went 6-for-6 at the free throw line to help seal the win.
Jessica Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) and Cerrato hit back-to-back threes to put UWSP up 6-2 as the Pointers won a defensive battle to lead 10-6 after one. Collins made four-straight points as the offenses kicked in in the second quarter. The Pointers closed out the half with a 25-20 advantage.
Collins and Schmidt made consecutive baskets to open the third quarter as the lead grew to nine. Cerrato nailed a three as the Pointers closed the quarter on a 13-2 run and held the Muskies without a field goal for the final 6:12.
Lakeland started the fourth quarter with a 12-1 push and got within four with 4:40 to go. Schmidt pushed the lead back to six with a bucket and UWSP went 8-for-8 from the charity stripe to close out the win.
The Pointers travel to Illinois on Saturday (Nov. 23) to face North Central. Tip-off in Naperville is set for 5:00 p.m.
