UWSP Football Solid in 40-12 Victory over UWEC

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (3-5, 2-3) scored 37-straight points after falling behind 6-0 en route to a 40-12 victory over UW-Eau Claire (3-5, 1-4) on Saturday.

Senior quarterback Matt Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) threw four touchdowns passes on the day, two each to fellow senior Jonte Webb (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) and freshman Jeffery Williams (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead).  Urmanski completed 14 of 25 passes for 247 yards.

Webb caught five passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns.  Williams also had five receptions for 96 yards and two scores.

On the ground, Williams had 35 yards on five carries. ShamaJ Williams (Racine, Wis./Lutheran) rushed 14 times for 59 yards.

Defensively, Nevada Laabs (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) was all over the field with 24 tackles, including 12 solo takedowns.  Kameron Kryzanski (Thorp, Wis./Thorp) added 18 tackles and the duo combined for four tackles for loss.  Berkley Corvino (Weston, Wis./DC Everest) had 1.5 sacks and UWSP got interceptions from Felix King (Chicago, Ill./John Adams) and Donovan Lucas (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer).

The Pointers stopped the Blugolds on the opening drive, but an acrobatic interception gave UWEC the ball right back.  Three plays later, the Blugolds took a 6-0 lead as the hold on the extra point was fumbled.

After King intercepted a pass on the next UWEC drive, Urmanski connected with Webb for 37 yards to put the Pointers in the red zone.  Two plays later, the two connected on a four-yard pass and, with the extra point, UWSP took a 7-6 lead.

Early in the second quarter, the Pointers struck again.  Urmanski and Jeffery Williams (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead) hooked up for 56 yards to put UWSP at the UWEC 11 yard line.  Two plays later, the duo connected again from five yards as the lead extended to 13-6.

UWSP kicker Victor Ponterio (Melrose, Wis./Melrose-Mindoro) kicked a 35-yard field goal as time expired to give the Pointers a 16-6 lead at the half.

On the second drive of the third quarter, UWSP went 70 yards on 11 plays culminating with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Urmanski to Webb.

Early the fourth, UWSP's defense forced the Blugolds to punt deep in their own territory.  A high snap on the punt was booted out the end zone for a safety as UWSP took a 24-6 lead.  On the ensuing free kick, Lucas returned it 65 yard for his second return touchdown in as many games.

Lucas stopped the next UWEC drive with an interception.  Six plays later, Urmanski hit Williams with a 19-yard strike for a 37-6 lead.

The Blugolds put together a late drive to cut the lead to 37-12 as the extra point hit the upright.  On UWSP's next drive, Ponterio kicked a 47-yard field goal to cap the scoring.

The Pointers travel to Platteville on Saturday (Nov. 9) for the final road game of the season.  Kick off against Pioneers is set for 2:00 p.m.
