ASHLAND, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (1-0) opened the season with a convincing 100-49 win at Northland College (2-1) on Tuesday. It was the first time UWSP hit the century mark since Dec. 13, 2003 in a 100-65 win at Carroll.
Sophomore
Amber Baehman (Plainfield, Wis./Tri-County) led a quintet of Pointers in double figures with a game-high 20 points. She grabbed nine boards and had one of UWSP's four blocks.
Junior
Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) was perfect from the field and the free throw line. She went 4-for-4 from the field and 5-for-5 from the line for 13 points in just 11 minutes.
Sophomore
Jordyn Ellis (Winneconne, Wis./Winneconne) had a career-high 11 points. Freshman
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) and senior
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) were also in double digits with 10 points each.
The Pointers got three-pointers from Baehman and
Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) to jump ahead early, 8-0. Baehman hit another triple and had 10 points in the first quarter as UWSP led 29-12 after one.
Cerrato scored UWSP's first seven points of the second quarter.
Erin Moran (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) and Ellis each added four points late as the Pointers led 53-25 at the half.
Collins had all 11 of her points in the third quarter as the lead grew to 78-41 heading to the fourth.
Freshmen
Laynie Bessette (Manawa, Wis./Little Wolf),
Sam Cappadora (Granton, Wis./Neillsville) and
Grace Myklebust (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) each scored their first collegiate points in the fourth quarter. It was Myklebust's first career field goal, a three-pointer, that got UWSP to the 100-point mark.
The Pointers travel to Whitewater for the UW-Whitewater Tip-Off Tournament this weekend. UWSP will face DePauw on Friday (Nov. 15) at 6:00 p.m. and Concordia University Chicago on Saturday (Nov. 16) at 3:00 p.m.
