STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (1-0-0) won its season opener, 3-0, over visiting St. Olaf (0-1-0) by scoring a goal in each period on Friday.
Junior
Alana Achterkirch (St. Michael, Minn./North Wright County) gave the Pointers a 1-0 lead at the 13:50 mark of the first period.
Shannon Motzko (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) and
Cassie Knutson (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) grabbed assists on the play.
In the second period, Motzko netted her first goal of the season at 13:21 with
Haley Sellers (Kenosha, Wis./Milwaukee Jr. Admirals) assisting on the play.
Freshman
Ashtyn Wiltscheck (Sleepy Eye, Minn./New Ulm) scored her first career goal in the third, a power-play tally at the 6:15 mark, to complete the scoring. Senior
Alex Grubbs (Minong, Wis./Spooner) and junior
Cassie Newcomer (McFarland, Wis./Madison Capitols) had assists on the goal.
Senior goaltender
Marit Larson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) made 19 saves to record the shutout. Oles goaltender Ivy Shonka stopped 35 shots.
The Pointers and Oles complete the weekend series at Ice Hawks Arena on Saturday (Nov. 2). Puck drop is slated for 2:30 p.m.
