PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (16-5, 2-1) suffered its first conference loss in five sets at the hands of UW-Platteville (14-6, 2-1) on Saturday night.
April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) and
Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) each recorded double-doubles with a team-high tying 13 digs each. Gehl led the Pointers with 16 kills and Adams registered a game-high 36 assists.
Maddie Lawson (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) had four kills in the first set, including a pair late to tie the set at 23-23, but the Pioneers won the set with the final two points. UWSP used a couple spurts to create separation and
Tara Emme (St. Nazianz, Wis./Valders) secured the set win with a kill to even the match.
After an early 3-0 lead by UWSP, the Pioneers scored 10 of the next 12 points and held off the Pointers in the third set. UWSP used a 6-0 run in the fourth set to overcome a deficit and force a fifth set.
In the fifth set, UWP took a 4-1 lead and the Pointers couldn't catch up in the first league loss of the season.
The Pointers return home on Wednesday (Oct. 9) to face UW-Oshkosh. The 7:00 p.m. match in Berg Gym is the annual Attacking Alzheimer's match.
