STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (2-2, 1-0) turned in several big offensive plays and the Pointers' defense had four interceptions in a 30-16 win over UW-River Falls (1-3, 0-1) in the conference opener on Saturday.
Senior quarterback
Matt Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) completed 16 of 31 passes for 245 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 35 yards and two touchdowns.
Fellow senior
Jonte Webb (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) hauled in five receptions for 143 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown catch.
ShamaJ Williams (Racine, Wis./Lutheran) led the UWSP rushing attack with 117 yards on 18 carries. He scored on a 75-yard run for his second touchdown of the season.
The UWSP defense was led by
Berkley Corvino (Weston, Wis./DC Everest) with 10 tackles, two for sacks. Four different Pointers had an interception each.
Jawahn Downing (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) got the first UWSP pick on the opening possession to stop a Falcons' drive in the red zone. The Pointers fumbled on the first offensive play and gave the ball right back. UWRF punched it in two plays later for a 7-0 lead.
The Pointers drove 11 plays on the ensuing possession, but stalled, resulting in a long field goal attempt that was no good. After a three-and-out by the defense, UWSP got back to work. Completions of 36 and 24 yards by Urmanski put UWSP inside the 10. Two plays later, Urmanski ran it in for a one-yard game-tying touchdown.
On UWSP's first possession of the second quarter, it took the Pointers just six plays to go 92 yards, capped by a 60-yard TD reception by Webb.
Later in the quarter, it was UWSP's defense stepping up.
Kameron Kryzanski (Thorp, Wis./Thorp) picked off Ben Beckman for the Pointers' second interception of the game. After a
Carter Unger (Waukesha, Wis./South) punt pinned the Falcons deep, the UWSP defense forced a punt after a three-and-out. The snap went over the punter's head for a safety to increase the lead to 16-7.
Williams took the opening handoff of the third quarter 75 yards for a touchdown as the Pointers seized control, 23-7.
The Falcons marched 80 yards on 12 plays to score a touchdown on the next drive. The Pointers thwarted a two-point attempt to hold a 23-13 edge.
Late in the third, UWSP put together a sustained drive going 76 yards in 11 plays. Urmanski capped the drive with a six-yard run after completions of 28 and 14 yards and a fourth-down run by
Jahi Stigall (Chicago, Ill./DePaul College Prep).
The Falcons got a field goal early in the fourth to cut it to a two-possession game. Later in the quarter,
Felix King (Chicago, Ill./John Adams) intercepted a pass in the end zone to stop a long drive for the Falcons to seal the win.
The Pointers travel to Oshkosh next Saturday (Oct. 12) for a 1:00 p.m. kick off against the Titans.
