OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (2-3, 1-1) held UW-Oshkosh (4-1, 2-2) to a season-low tying 20 points, but fell to the Titans, 20-7, on Saturday.
Senior quarterback
Matt Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) completed 24 of 47 passes for 251 yards. His primary targets were fellow seniors
Sonny Soquet (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door) and
Jonte Webb (Marinette, Wis./Marinette). The duo hauled in nine passes for 126 yards.
Junior running back
ShamaJ Williams (Racine, Wis./Lutheran) gained 58 yards on 17 carries and scored UWSP's lone touchdown.
Defensively,
Berkley Corvino (Weston, Wis./DC Everest) led all players with 12 tackles, including four for loss.
Kameron Kryzanski (Thorp, Wis./Thorp) added 10 takedowns for the Pointers.
The Pointers had more first downs, 17, than UWO, 12, and UWSP held the Titans to just 96 yards through the air.
UWSP had a pair of drives inside UWO territory in the first quarter, but came away empty as the team played a scoreless first 15 minutes.
Three plays into the second quarter, the Titans took the lead on a 43-yard strike through the air, one of just 12 completions on the day for UWO's Kobe Berghammer.
On the ensuing possession, the Titans blocked a UWSP punt to take over deep in Pointers' territory. The UWSP defense held the Titans to a field goal.
Later in the quarter, Urmanski threw his second pick of the game and it was returned for a touchdown as UWO led 17-0 at the half.
On their first drive of the second half, the Titans again starting inside UWSP territory. After an eight-play drive, the UWSP defense stood strong and held UWO to a short field goal.
Later in the third, UWSP started just inside UWO territory. On fourth down, Urmanski hit Webb for a 35-yard gain down to the 12. Two plays later, Urmanski connected with
Jeffery Williams (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead) for 10 yards setting up first-and-goal from the two.
ShamaJ Williams (Racine, Wis./Lutheran) punched it in on the next play to get UWSP on the board.
The Pointers' defense did its job the remainder of the game, not allowing the Titans inside the UWSP 40 over the final 24 minutes of the game. UWSP's offense, however, couldn't muster another scoring drive to get back in the game.
UWSP returns home to face UW-Whitewater on Saturday (Oct. 19) for a 1:00 p.m. Homecoming kickoff at Goerke Park.
